Sustainable Urban Environment Model (SUEM) - by Efren

Efren's model joins community, eco-urban planning, territorial ecosystem and urban metabolism into one. The model is adjustable.

Almost all models have been created using very basic materials present in Labein - stationary; they are the very first models inspired by vectors of Sustainable Urban Environment developed by Labein.

Community: “a neighbourhood-scale, rich in relations, mixed, diverse, interdependent, networked with other communities, belonging to a local culture, rooted in its heritage and at the service of coming generations”

Eco-urban planning: “an ecologically-based urban planning and development, inspired by permaculture, respectful of the places, defining meaningful and qualitative spaces at a human scale; at the service of the citizens, giving an optimized and synergic room to every use and energetic or material flow day and night”

Territorial ecosystem: “a slow, cyclic and not exhaustive colonization of the underground, ground and athmosphere, with scaled transport networks; arterialized, polycentric, dense, organic, permeated and self-limiting but never closed-up”

Urban metabolism - functioning of a model city to that of eco-systems, characterised by an inward flow feeding the internal processes, and by an outward one, constituted by the sink of wastes and emissions into surrounding environment, thus closing the cycle of metabolism. While eco-systems are closed-circular systems, where a network of negative feedbacks leads to a substantial "homeostasis", urban systems are instead energetically and materially open systems.

Vectors of sustainability for Disonancias are:
Community, Energetic efficiency, Competitive advantage, Governance, Eco-construction, Quality of life, Eco-urban planning, Industrial symbiosis, Diversity, Territorial ecosystem, Bioclimatic architecture, Regional innovation, Industrialization, ITC, Integration, Paradigm, Technology, Heritage, Reuse, Research, Urban marketing, Urban metabolism…

During my first week at Labein I have had 1-2-1 meetings with 17 members of Disonancias team. Majority of them during our meeting have been developing first models of Sustainable Urban Environment Model (SUEM).

All created models will be presented on the blog and everybody is encouraged to comment on them, suggest improvements, other approaches etc. Every voice is important. Please feel free to comment in Basque, Spanish or English.

Today you can see first model exploring one of the elements of SUE (Sustainable Urban Environment) - Diversity created by Nieves.

My vehicle

While in Labein my office space will be mobile as I have a table with wheels and I will be working in various areas of Labein.

Yesterday I had a great time with ‘steel and iron unit’ and today I am occupying space by the window next to ‘regional development’ experts.

Who knows… if there are free power sockets by your table you might be next!

JdI, the IT wizard

Today about 30 emails where exchanged between JdI, BI and AB to make a spreadsheet work via remota into the intranet operated by AB crossing gmail accounts and the local server.

Just imagine some years ago arranging meetings among 30 people with a 10 minute takt 2000 kms away giving everyone privileges to modify the agenda. weird, isnt it?

perhaps i should retire my paper calender.
