SUEM instructions - how to use wooden objects

Instructions are going to be publish over a period of next few days. If you prefer to receive them in one file, PDF with instructions is available, e-mail me at: aniabas{at}gmail{dot}com
Prototypes of SUEM are in La Q. Please test them and leave us your feedback! Any problems with finding the objects? Contact Borja Izaola or Igone Revilla.

SUE M - work in progress

SUE Model - under development ...
During my last visit in May together with Borja we spent hours in Blue Sky room thinking/using/playing with very first version of SUE M (Beta!)
SUE M:
- is going to be as big as your palm
(so you can see that every problem you want to run through this tool is manageable, scalable & touchable)
- will help visualise your problem/idea/project
(so you can see it rather than only think about it)
- is going to be open for experimentation (suggested ways of using will accompany the model but everybody is invited to come up with new ways the tool can be used!)
Coming soon!

SUE LAB - evaluation of the dynamics

1.
+ dynamism! movement!
= co-creation
- tools to go deeper with ideas
2.
+ thinking in a free way with other is like having sex in groups
= i came late! (lack of time to put things, create things)
- in some moments, we were not acting as a team, we were not creating all together (to have sex alone is much more boring)
3.
+ positive imagination effect
+ team work
+ working with physical things
- not enough time!
4.
+ i understand how this LAB coudl fit with my job!
= don't know if we (Labein) are preapred for this kind of LAB
5.
+ plenty of little things to continue building with
= not enough time
- clearer tasks!

6.
+ made me think about future!
= are these things useful or is it just a dream?
- abstract! (maybe too abstract?)
7.
+team work!
+ spontaneous!
- will it continue?
- will we have a chance to take advantage of these ideas?
- can existing working enviornment be changed????
8.
+ made me realised how working in a different environment would be!
- it seems a bit abstract and technologically too difficult to achieve
9.
where is SUE? are we taking it into account or this is just a special Lab for everything?

SUE LAB - third proposal

The third group also decided to build their LAB rather than grow or change already developed ideas. The group started with a long discussion, watching the floor, walls and ceiling of what used to be La Q before I have dismantled it.
The group built a Sustainable Laboratory (not only a laboratory for sustainable urban environment research). Made out of various elements and inspiring people who are going to work there to not only work but also live in a sustainable way. Your work style is your lifestyle. Your colleagues are your friends.
Another conclusion and selling sentences was: This is a space that adapts to your needs!
Is it enough to make your life sustainable?
Some of the ideas of the group:
- water in the lab should be coming from the humidity (re-using!)
- the lab should be powered by solar panels and solar re-charge area has been incorporated into the lab
- the space has a rubber floors (not sure about rational behind it. is there any? or was it done for aesthetics reasons? - group - please comment!)

- workplaces are shared and people are not attached to one working area
- tables/walls are portable and adaptable to the needs of workers
- space included spaces where one could reflect (MOMENTO ZEN) as well walk while thinking and developing new ideas (quote: a place to move without any other distractions; protected, no photos, no air-conditioning, no people)
- shower (called detox chamber) - for those who arrived to work on bikes and would like to refresh themselves. (the bike park is also included)

- no clothing restrictions (ties allowed?)
- vegetable patch and flower patch alongside with cooking area
- sea nearby (or swimming pool in the worst case scenario)
- personal conversation area (for 2 or 3 people to solve personal conflicts) - area without chairs, open, allowing people to move and express themselves in a free way
Ania during lunchtime had a chat with people who haven’t participated in the dynamics but have seen the space. They called visual outcomes of all 3 sessions looking as: ' an after earthquake mess'.
Who knows, maybe coming up with new ideas requires mess?
SUE LAB - second proposal
The group that participated in the second dynamic said that the first proposal did not look as a laboratory and started from the scratch. The main concept of the space: the floor is your table. Floor would work as an interactive surface or one could project on the floor from multiple projectors suspended from the ceiling. In order to view large-scale projections the group proposed a balcony - as a viewing space.
All resources necessary for work should be hidden inside the floor: one can open parts of the floor to access storage area. If you need to have a meeting in the room and want to sit, again within the floor where could be hidden corridors with comfy sits. All one needs to do is to open the right part of the floor to access sitting areas. The walls of the room should be both portable and deformable and flexible and comfy so you could i.e. rest your elbows on them while standing by the wall.
For this group the laboratory would be a place to analyse existing components and challenge current thinking; search for new solutions and alternatives but also this could be a show space (show room) to visualise future, present projects outcomes and share knowledge.

SUE LAB - dynamics in progress

During ongoing reserach on Sustainable Urban Environment Model (SUE M) came up an idea that maybe what is need is not a Model but Laboratory. The aim of the dynamic is to develop this Lab & look into ways how it can be introduce as a working space in Labein.
The first dynamic has happened today!
Suggested Lab space seems to be quite traditional. It consists of many elements of traditional working environment such as: a desk (but mobile), a computer and storage space (again on the wheel). Innovations? A portable large board that would allow you to draw/stick/pin your ideas to it and see your thinking process in a larger scale. And... introducing terrace where one could move the necessary equipment and enjoy working outdoors (umbrellas, sockets, light and easy to move equipment...). A! The need to have more intimate working spaces so inspirations come to mind also has been mentioned.
Two more dynamics are going to take place tomorrow but you are already welcome to comment, suggest, improve... Pop in to La Q if you would like to CHANGE existing first arrangement!

Searching for sustainability (in UK) for 3 days = 14 + 12 + 3+ 1 + 2+ 13+ 7+ 10 + 1 + 7

More or less 14 hours on a train or tube (we have visited sustainable locations in and around London, Leicester and in South Shropshire)
12 hours long working days (I was ruthless and we worked during lunch breaks and dinners)
3 guided tours (around BedZED, EcoHouse, Ludlow, Craven Arms and Bishop’s Castle) and 1 self guided tour around Brock Hill in 2 groups (Borja preferred to visit the location on his own…)
13 great people met on the way (some of them are chairmen…)
7 postcards sent as a memory of the tour (I was actually testing a new evaluation tool)
10 minutes long performance on the graves in front of the Abbey in Shrewsberry (the town has been re-named during evening walk)
1 nasty cold brought back home (and I have managed to develop into something a bit more serious – 7 days on antibiotics! ouch … but i am back! )
= 70

SUE M: February dynamics - feedback

Feedback from February dynamics
:)
Very good dynamic. Made me think differently about the process and helped me clarify my own ideas.
Amusing + short time
It’s very good because made us think in our own thoughts about the future of SUEM in a different and funny way.
Playing is helpful to work with ideas
It moved/shaked my mind!
Me ha rescatado de la rutina de hoy!
Buena Idea
40 min for dynamic is goo!
Know now new people and new ways in Labein
Clever and quick
Really good to stand up! This helps with thinking!
Good to see path instead of agenda!
Una forma divertida y exigente - si quieres puedes aportar - una via valida de trabajo en grupo

:/
Would be good to work on a physical model
How to continue?
A more complex tree would be useful
Too little time!
Me ha hecho pensar
:(
We should have shared the outcomes together as one big group before finishing!
There was no place for future vision!
I do not like writing
El otro grupo me daba empujones

SUE M: forms, users, functions

Outcomes of the February DYNAMICS:
What FORM should SUE M have? (SUE M = Sustainable Urban Environment Model)
REAL !!!
A system of indicators, a scoreboard
A suggestive form that inspires you to explain… a simple way to explain complex ideas, maybe like a child’s game, able to move, to play with
Physical, portable, not only digital, but with a digital part to show the process of creation attached to it- I’m tired of everything digital
A toolbox
Hybrid, transparent, suggestive, open and flexible in time and adaptation
A giant model
A film showing what to do, and what happens if we don’t
A sculpture
A big interactive panel
A form? Could it be ethereal? Does “new” culture have a form?
Something to be touched and played with
Colourful, simple outwards (to get the message), sophisticated inwards (complex structure), diverse in meaning (multiple faces)
A gift, a souvenir
The form of a living organism
A virtual world
Many forms and many scales, depending on the needs
A golden egg
A competitive game: the winner, the most sustainable

Who is SUE M for?
4 stakeholders, policy makers and development agents,
4 young people,
4 eeuus tecnalia,
4 anyone who signs a contract with us on this subject,

What is SUE M?

Outcomes of the February 'DYNAMICS":
What is a SUE M? (SUE M = Sustainable Urban Environment Model)
It is: ...
A social culture; a way to see life,
A mess where FE and BI have put us into (& I wanted to get in),
A chance to design an ideal, a dream,
A material tool for building,
A model (not just physical) of a city, with 1000 agents and 1M relations among them,
Something we’ll talk about in the future,
A challenge to jump over,
Something that helps you see all components of a healthy city, and how they interrelate; a Dynamic mechanism that reproduces these interrelations,
A proof of the failure of this civilization,
Something tangible, … real,
A representation of reality showing main restrictions which give form to the whole*

A chance to help us understand what we talk about; a laboratory to mix & test different ingredients or vectors of sustainability;
A challenge to make us think differently and creatively about our work,
… i don’t know…
A proposal of how urban spaces could be, taking into account a living style better integrated with nature,
A physical representation of goals related to urban sustainability,
Guidelines for environmental and social respect and a sensible economic growth, a tool, a Support, a way to clarify & organise many ideas; and also a chance to think about these ideas,
Marketing for Tecnalia, something touchable, an example to be followed by others, a poli-application field, for multi-use and multi-users,
Maybe just a new environment, a new game, a new…?
Probably a way of thinking, imagining, a place to think, to imagine about/in the city in many senses, ways, directions, starting from the environment,
Responsibility of resources, social cohesion, environmental management & economic stability
A representation of our wishes and expectations of the urban life container.
